I haven't always gardened on a small urban lot, but even in the city trees present a challenge. One side of our house is given over to rusticity. Here we stash much of the plant material from pruned shrubs and dead foliage as well as leftover mulch delivered by our county as part of the `Black Gold' program. Over time, some of the dead plants have renewed themselves in this little "wilderness" either because a not quite dead root found nourishment, or seeds sprouted. As a result, I decided a few years ago I needed to assist the site and make it a `woodsy' niche.The first thing we did was fight the ivy, which is so tenacious. After I pull it, I hang it over the fence to dry (as well as pull it from the fence, which my unknowing neighbors never do). Next, we purposely amended the soil using mulch from the city program. Then we made sure the bushes and shrubs and the trees were pruned to let in a little light. Next, we added `civilized' plants such as a Camellia, Hellebores, Tiarella, Violets, Arum Lily, Hosta, Spring bulbs including Scilla, which makes a nice appearance as "blue bells" in spring, and other denizens of the woodlands identified in the BBG WOODLAND GARDENS.We did this the hard way, learning in dribs and drabs, but you have a choice. You can purchase a book from the BBG that covers all the angles on gardening in woodlands (well, as much as you need to get started -- my only complaint is that the entry on invasive plants is pathetic). In a series of articles by respected garden writers, the BBG monograph includes sections covering `Woodlands Ecology', Woodlands Gardens' and Woodland Plants'. Authors include Colston Burrell, a well known garden designer on the East Coast (and the editor of this monograph) and Daniel Hinckly, who is associated with Heronswood Nursery on the West Coast. The various woodlands gardens range from "real" woodlands at the edge of a "clearing" to tree planted areas constructed in urban areas. The section covering plants is divided into regions, and the `Mid-Atlantic' is split from the `Northeast' and the `Deep South', of which it is both.

I love Steve Berry’s books, his clever plots, and his well-painted characters, but this one left me flat, for four reasons: one general and three specific.In general, as a Catholic, I am used to authors such as Berry who dislike Catholicism, Christianity in general, and religion as a whole. Nothing new in our ultra-secular, materialist culture and it sells well. Criticism is good and necessary and often humorous. Few can argue that either faith in general or the Church in particular cannot benefit from it. But what I read was not criticism or poking fun but disdain. It is gratuitous, unnecessary, and in my opinion harms the story’s appeal.Specifically, three things consistently cause the book to ring hollow throughout, taking the energy out of the book. One, all the clerics in the story are monsters. Not one or two multifaceted characters who have chosen evil in certain actions, but all grotesque caricatures. One monster cleric is believable, but all clerics being monsters makes the bad guys ridiculous and unbelievable. Silly rather than scary. That hurts the story. At least one lowly good guy priest should have been included to make it more believable. Or a priest who does evil things believing that they are good or believing that they are necessary for a greater good. Ends justifying the means, etc. Grey is a lot more interesting and believable than everything being black or white.Second, not a single cleric or person related to the Church displays the most basic faith. Even if one believes that the Church and the Catholic faith are wholly invalid, the fact remains that priests, bishops, and archbishops do have faith. Some to be sure are cold, calculating, power hungry, and criminal, but they retain a basic faith, even if they choose evil. Even if they all lost their faith over time, they would at least speak with the language of faith, instead of the language of murderous bureaucrats as in the book.Third, finally (spoiler alert), the plot revolves around a lost 4th century blueprint document that instructs bishops on bogus doctrines to create the Church and control the masses. Again, even if one believes that the Church, its doctrines, and religion in general are wholly invalid, it is completely unbelievable that the Church or the Sovereign Military and Hospitaller Order of St. John of Jerusalem - a 906 year old Catholic lay religious order whose motto is to defend the faith and serve their Lords the poor and sick - would keep a copy of such a document. I was expecting something more clever than a piece of paper that says ‘the Church is bogus’.

I think "The Malta Exchange" is Steve Berry at his best. I tend to disagree with those who feel otherwise. I will say right up front that I'm an avid Steve Berry reader and always eagerly await his next novel; I've read them all. I love historical fiction, and whereas, I can't place Berry's works in that category, I do enjoy the addition of those little known historical facts woven into his storylines. This is what I enjoyed most about "The Malta Exchange." I learned a lot about a period I otherwise would not have studied. Having read Berry for so long, I tend to know now what is pure fiction and what isn't. When I read his windup at the end, I'm usually not surprised anymore at what turns out to be fiction. And after all these years, I still am amazed at how artistically creative he is in his writing to be able to weave real historical facts into the storytelling the way he does.I've always loved the character of Cotton Malone, even if at times, he seems too good to be true. Berry has developed him well and is consistent from novel to novel. Recently, he's introduced Luke Daniels, and I admit to having trouble finding the same love for him, but that fact does not take away from how engaging I found this book. Yes, it's fiction...and at times...some situations that he manages to get out of may feel like a stretch...but that can apply to so many works nowadays that we find entertaining. After all, Malone is the main character. Do we really want him to be killed off? Nay!I found it hard to put this novel down and read it at night before going to bed in just a few days. I recommend it as one of, if not the best, of Berry's works.

I love this writer, however, this book did not develop the NEW characters, and spent WAY too much time explaining Catholic doctrine in detail. It was a relief when it ended. Never thought I would feel this way about anything this author wrote.

I’ve read and own ALL of Steve Berry’s books and always find them captivating and thrilling. I love the historical implications and Cotton seems like and “old friend”. The Malta Exchange has been just an OK read for me, I think there was too much going on with Luke and Cotton having separate story lines most of the book as well as too many points of view from the other characters. Also Luke’s flasbacks to life lessons learned growing up in Tennessee, his multitude of mentions of his Morher’s wisdom, etc. slowed down the action quite a bit and I had a hard time getting through the book with enjoyment of every word.One interesting thing that gave me food for thought was Cotton thinking about the Malone bloodline ending with him and his unease regarding that. Perhaps there is a baby in his and Cassiopeia’s future?

Steve Berry writes history and I love reading history and this book has lots - a whole lot - more than expected. The book is extremely well researched. Very well written. But.....too much of a good thing can spoil the batch! I would normally give Barry's book a 5 star rating. This time is a 4 because, well, too much history. The plot gets lost in this history. I, a history lover, skimmed a few parts. I never do that while reading Berrys books. Never.

I really love this series. This book is no exception. Just when I think there isn't much more to explore, Steve Berry comes up with another interesting plot. I learn a lot more history from the author's explanations of what is true and what is fiction than I really did in almost all of my history classes in school. This series always has an intriguing twist or spin on history with a "what if" thrown in for good measure. If you liked the previous books in the series, I say you should give this book a shot because I don't think you'll be disappointed. I won't bore you with a plot summary as I know other reviewers are fond of doing that. Have at it! I can't wait to read the next one.

Good book to start with if you are interested in learning about computer forensics. Some of the material is a little out of date, but overall a pretty informative read that was organized well and easy to understand.

The dummy series computer forensics was a great read for me. I use the information at my business and personally to understand how to go about doing forensics on the computers that my business and I own.

Awesome introduction to computer forensics beginner guide for court prep and testimony. I'm starting in the field. Not a how to book. Just basic overview.

Needed it for school plenty of good info.

I am studying computer forensics as both a hobby and another degree. I bought this book to use as a primer. It is funny as well as informative. I recommend it to anyone considering a career in computer forensics.

Ursula K Le Guin. I had heard the name many times growing up. It was always spoken with respect by people who held my respect. And yet, for all of that I had not read her work until now. I wonder how different my life would have been if I had read her work sooner. I'll never know.This book is, at its simplest and least descriptive, a thought experiment. What if there were a world where gender as we know it did not exist.But that is not the half of it. It is not even close.This book examines how nationalism can be wonderful and yet poisonous. It compares the societies of differing nation-states. It looks at humanity's role in nature. It stares unflinchingly at love in various forms and in the end, the reader has gone through a journey nearly as transformative as the one taken by our protagonist, Genly Ai.My only true complaint stems from the idea that Genly's gender biases are so strong that he consistently labels the Gethenians as he despite having been briefed of their genderless status before beginning the assignment.Still ignoring the pronoun confusion, this was an amazing book. It is thoughtful and thought provoking. It is wise and wonderful. And though a world as cold as Winter sounds like my own personal hell, I will revisit the characters again with pleasure.

This book changed my thinking about gender. The planet natives are normally gender neutral (one can't say androgynous as they are neither male nor female, rather than both) until they enter kemmer, a sort of heat, when they become randomly male or female. After kemmer they go back to the neutral state, unless pregnant. So one person can be the mother or two and the father of three.This book was published in 1969, and LBGTQ people may find some of the ideas dated, but it remains a profound exploration of what happens when the basic traits by which one is defined in one's own society don't apply in another culture. I was surprised when I re-read "The Left Hand of Darkness" to realize it could apply to any trait - race, religion, even political affiliation.Highly recommended.

This book started out quite slow. I did not know if I would be able to finish it. All I can tell you is, hang in there, learn the weird names, and it will be worth it. In the story, she tells something not quite relatable in words alone. One of my new favorite authors.

On Gethen, human envoy Genly Ai has been sent to convince the planet’s leaders to join the Ekumen, a loose confederation of planets who do not rule one another, but who cooperate in matters of interest to all Ekumen members. Barriers to Ai’s success include Gethenian pride, antipathy and discord between that world’s rival nation-states, and Ai’s lack of understanding in a global culture fueled by the ambisexual nature of Gethenians. The only native who believes the Ekumen can save Gethen is Estraven, a native whom Ai regards with suspicion. But when politics casts Estraven in a criminal light, Ai is dragged into a fierce powerplay and finds himself imprisoned, beaten, and left for dead. Only by abandoning his prejudice—and learning to trust the Otherness of his savior—can he survive his ordeal.The Left Hand of Darkness was originally published in 1969 and is the title that established Le Guin as a science fiction writer. It’s incredibly intricate, an excellent example of worldbuilding. Politics and governance are well-represented, if convoluted, which makes it all the more believable. The climate on Gethen is wintry; inhabitants and their lifestyles reflect this in every detail. But what captivated me most was the nature of Gethenian sexuality. On Gethen, gender is irrelevant. Though Ai uses predominantly masculine pronouns throughout the narrative, native humanoids on Gethen are not born male or female. They are neither—until they enter “kemmer,” a regular period of increased hormonal activity in which Gethenians are driven to find a partner who is also in kemmer, for sex and procreation. Hormone levels determine which partner becomes the inseminator and which becomes the recipient. If the recipient becomes pregnant, they remain “female” throughout the gestation period, after which they return to normal. This cycle drives the entire culture, coloring every aspect of Gethenian society.Though this isn’t the only detail to recommend the book, it’s definitely key to the story. At the time it was written, Gethenian sexuality drew a lot of attention among readers and reviewers; but it’s still relevant today. While some have criticized Le Guin for homophobia, and while Le Guin later expressed regret that she’d portrayed Gethenian norms as heterosexual, the fact remains that the story explores the nature of gender in our own society, as well as on Gethen. For my own part, I found the development of friendship and love between characters so widely diverse much more meaningful than when or how or even whether copulation occurred.In any event, The Left Hand of Darkness is a classic in science fiction literature, a multi-layered story that explores not only cultural divides but sociological ones as well as deep, philosophical quandaries, a must-read for all sci-fi fans. Groundbreaking and evocative, I found myself rooting for both Ai and Estraven, and was sorry to turn the last page. Only one of multiple novels set in the Hainish series, LHoD can be read as a standalone tale. One caveat: Le Guin runs heavy on detail and subtlety. It isn’t exactly an easy read. If that bothers you, dear reader, push through. I promise the payoff is worth it.

It explores gender in a unique and enlightening way. How we, as humans, perceive gender and how it effects our lives and ways of thinking. It explores the bonds of friendship, love, politics, and war all without the confines of gender. A fascinating read through the eyes of the "Envoy" as he struggles to survive in a toiling political climate on an alien world.Well worth the read!

I've only tried one recipe from this book, Curried Kabocha Coconut Soup (didn't have access to kabocha so I used acorn squash). I personally didn't fall head over heels for it, but the folks that did said that it reminded them of lobster bisque. I will make it again, but I will cut down the 3/4 cup of dried shrimp to 1/4, was just a little fishy for my taste. The gal that owns the local Asian market flipped through the book and thought all the recipes looked solid. Can't wait to try another one!Something to think of before buying this book...do you have access to the ingredients? This isn't American knock-off Thai food. This is good, hearty, authentic Thai. Right from home! If you're not the adventurous type this may not be the book for you. All of the ethnic ingredients are available here on Amazon. But I see a lot of reviewers leaving bad reviews because the ingredients for any given cook book are not available at the standard market. Simple, healthy food. I love Thai Curries. I've been spending a fortune on boxed curries from Marian's Kitchen. With this book, I can do it all from scratch. This book doesn't disappoint!

Just finished reading this book. It is a great starter book if you want to learn Thai cooking. All the basics are here, curry pastes, broth recipes, and Thai favourites like Pad Thai.There is also commentary by the author about the history of Thai food and a thorough section on ingredients.

Finally, I can make thai food at home. The biggest drawback is there aren't pictures to accompany each recipe. That makes me sad, but I also thought that "throw everything into a slow cooker" is supposed to be easy, and these recipes are AMAZING, frankly, but it really has you make the curry from scratch which involves a plethora of spices and requires me to wash a second appliance and a few more dishes. That being said, when I have time to be a purist, I enjoy having the option of making my own curry.I've made some criticisms here, but the fact is my 5 stars are for the recipes and not about my convenience. I've only made 5 recipes so far but I'm probably going to use this book up pretty quickly. Everything has tasted delicious, even when my dear non-cooking husband took a crack at it.

This cookbook is ideal for someone who is interested in trying Thai food.This book teaches you how to prepare your food before you put it in the slower cooker.Its great for those who have a very busy live and what Thai food but dont want to pay the cost of the restuarants.It has recipes for soups and Noodles and curry.It also has a recipes for spring rolls.This book also tells some history also.It is a great book for everyone who knows how to cook or that dont know how to cook.These recipes are for the whole family and are healthy.I will be making my own thai food for now on.

As we have bern expanding our international slow cooker repiroire, Thai cuisine is a wonderful addition. The vegetarian dishes are excellent and we love the introduction to new flavors at home. We've stocked our Thai pantry with procucts from Amazon and local grocers too.

I love me some Asian food but my fiancé is super picky. I hate cooking so we came to an agreement that he has to “widen his palate” in exchange for my time in the kitchen. Using a slow cooker is my favorite “hands-off” cooking approach so this cookbook was super awesome to me!I like the ability to be able to substitute where necessary and still getting a very similarly delicious meal. The recipes are written out very well and the background info about Thai food, info about the ingredients you’re using and just the little helpful hints are great for beginner “chefs” like me. I personally want “easier” meal prep but once a week or so, this is perfect…plus, once I throw it in there, I leave it and Go!*product received in exchange for honest review*

Abraham Silberschatz is the Sidney J. Weinberg Professor of Computer Science at Yale University. Prior to joining Yale, he was the Vice President of the Information Sciences Research Center at Bell Laboratories. Prior to that, he held a chaired professorship in the Department of Computer Sciences at the University of Texas at Austin. His research interests include database systems, operating systems, storage systems, and network management.Professor Silberschatz is a Fellow of the Association of Computing Machinery (ACM), a Fellow of Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE), a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), and a member of the Connecticut Academy of Science and Engineering. He received the 2002 IEEE Taylor L. Booth Education Award, the 1998 ACM Karl V. Karlstrom Outstanding Educator Award, and the 1997 ACM SIGMOD Contribution Award. I like reading this book. The authors did a pretty decent job taking a hard subject and writing about in a way I could understand, and organizing the sections in a way that builds your knowledge. My professor gave us a number of hard programming assignments in C that followed the book as well and reinforced that knowledge. So if you use this book within the right system, it can be very good. I don't think it would be easy for a beginner to just read however. You really need to dive into some of the things that you read about and get your hands dirty to gain the full value from this book. My graduate class was able to cover 6 chapters completely plus a spattering from a few other chapters in one semester. It was a very worthwhile class.

Very succinct book for early learners like myself (neophytes as my teacher calls us). There is the full linux kernel development book in its fifth edition, but that can be dense and frustrating for beginners. This Operating System Concepts Essentials has a great accompanying website with lots of great code examples and various resources that are very helpful.

Loving this book. Had to purchase for my Operating Systems Theory class. When I saw that the regular edition cost over 100 bucks I was ready to grit my teeth and just buy it. Then I heard about the Indian edition which was insanely cheaper so I bought it without a second thought. Shipping was fast and the book is high quality. Some people complain the pages are too thin and you can’t concentrate because the text bleeds through; while the paper is thinner, I am not distracted by the very light bleed that comes through. Maybe if you hold a single page up to the light and try to read them you’ll get distracted...As for content, this book is great. After finishing a particularly long chapter, I found myself continuing to read simply because I was feeling more curious about what the author would talk about next.This edition is great!

Had to get this book for a class. The most confusing book I have every read, typos and you will need to read over the chapters twice to get what it being said. Best to use the Powerpoint on the linked site to get the summary of each chapter or just go to the summary within the chapter. I know they author's tried well to break down the subject but it seemed at times that it was too much filler and not just enough for what need to be explained.

This is a very well written book on operating system design, multiprogramming, threads and all the great things that go on inside your computer while it runs an operating system. It requires some prerequisite knowledge of computer hardware and some programming. As other reviewers have stated, it is not a freshman level book. It is however, an excellent guide for people studying software design.It seems to be lacking in some areas, the section on semaphores was probably the worst area of the book. I had to turn to Tanenbaum's works for better information. Overall though, worthy of four stars.Unfortunately, I have to add to my review that I am deeply disappointed in the direction the publisher has taken with respect to the text. I find it distasteful that publishers have gone from printing student solutions manuals to requiring access to a web site. Fortunately, the editions have not changed that much and the questions are still available in solutions manuals of prior editions or perhaps if you are lucky, someone has a PDF of them. Likewise, leading search engines can provide sources for researching the solution to see if your answer is correct.

This book was the required reading for one of my college programming courses. The authors go in to good details about the specifics of all subjects relating to operating systems in general. Some that were notable were the use and creation of semaphore objects, threading, CPU scheduling, and disk scheduling algorithms. The semaphores and threading were particularly useful in completing the classic synchronization problem 'The Dining Philosophers' which was one of the assignments for the course. The breakdown of disk organization was another very beneficial and highly interesting topic. The book covers MAC OS, Linux, Unix, Windows, as well as some information about older systems such as DOS and CP/M. The book has generalized examples and each topic includes a good deal of theory. I do not recommend this book for people without a solid foundation of C or C++. It helps to know Assembly as well, but not necessary.

This book has been around for many editions. I really enjoyed reading it. The author has good explanations with plenty of examples.

Excellent new book! The price is much cheaper, compared to the hardcover version, but the content is the same.

 As I have shared with many family and friends, I felt a calling to write this book. While writing "A Drop Of Water: A Spiritual Journey", I had a nice surprise. I had joy in my heart, I had fun, I was rhyming! I truly believe it was spiritually inspired. I was LITERALLY writing with my eyes closed. It was as if my fingers were dancing.  Before I knew it, I was sharing my story of several tremendous losses, including the loss of my first husband. Believe me, I am a very private person, I never thought I would share such painful memories.  However, I feel I must trust and have faith that this is the book I was called to write. Through my work as a Therapist and my own experiences, I realized that we all have dark nights of the soul. I hope that this book will serve as a reminder that if you have ever struggled with depression, grief, or loss of any kind, you are not alone. We are all connected.~ Yvonne Williams Casaus

The topic of suicide is a TABOO in modernity, a part of our human journey that is rarely talked about publicly. The author addresses the devastation of this tragedy bringing it from shadow to light, to give hope to those who may feel there is no hope for them. Casaus' synthesis of life and how we are all profoundly connected through water, paralleling our healing journey on Earth, is powerful.

A Drop of Water: A Spiritual JourneyYvonne Williams Casaus has written her personal account of recovery from traumatic loss. She relates the story as Wife, Mother, friend, Daughter and – most importantly – Licensed Personal Counselor. A Drop of Water has two parts and the first is descriptive. As a reader, I watched from behind Yvonne’s eyes and witnessed what no one should ever see. The second part of the story parallels her emotions after the vision. She masterfully honors her recovery process by giving voice, via “Stream of Consciousness” writing, to the aspects of herself shattered by trauma and loss. Yvonne uses the metaphor of water in her story’s second half to reconfigure a new SELF: more empowered and with greater helping abilities. She balances the challenging and the divine in writing this book, which has made her whole.

This is a wonderful and inspirational book. The author Yvonne shares her story with us allowing us to feel her pain and also feel her healing. It is very emotional, but very beautiful. It shows us that even in a bad situation you can find inspiration and become a stronger person. I recommend this book for anyone who is looking for inspiration and who feels like they are alone. This book shows us how we are all connected.

As soon as I started reading A Drop of Water: A Spiritual Journey I couldn't put it down. It is a very moving book that brought tears to my eyes. The book is a unique combination of memoir and poetic free form writing that is sure to inspire anyone who reads it. It is the perfect book for anyone who is dealing with grief or depression. It is a book I know I will read again and again.

A drop of water was a delight to read yet seriously thought provoking. We all grieve in our own ways this much is true, but Casaus lets the grief turn to love through her metaphors of water and letting go of our fears for living our lives to the fullest. Loved it.

This book is a stream-of-consciousness exploration of a surviving spouse of suicide, rising above her grief and guilt to a new life of understanding through the metaphor of water as a healing force. Initially, the author shies away from her own poetic impulses, and gradually comes to embrace her true nature. We evolve with her, riding in rhythmic waves.
