As with so many other arts, Japanese metallurgy resembles Western in many ways, but has its own unique character, too. Although patination is well established in the European tradition of metal-work, it generally seems to be an afterthought. "Now that we have this metal, how can we color it?" Japanese alloys like shibuichi and shakudo seem to be engineered differently: given available chemical treatments, what alloys can be concocted to create the most desirable tones? As a result, the patinas and alloys can't be discussed separately. They co-evolved, and any result depends on both.This beautiful book discusses both. It generally uses very safe patination chemistry and procedures, but does mention some of the more aggressive or hazardous materials used historically. It also starts on the complexities of heat treatments, surface enrichment, and layered patinas - topics that one could spend a lifetime mastering. This also discusses the final finishes, like wax, oil, or lacquer, that protect and enhance the treated surfaces.I was surprised to see arsenic mentioned in some of the alloys. Given today's risk-averse environment, it's hard to imagine such alloys being used outside a very narrow range of specialties. They have historical importance, though, and remind the reader that arsenical alloys appeared in antiquity in the west, before safer alternatives were developed.The book itself is a lovely and practical artifact. It's spiral bound, to lie flat on the workbench when it's in use. The wire binding is covered, though, to look more like standard binding and to keep the wire from snagging on anything. For any metalworker who wants additional depth and versatility in their final look, I recommend this highly.-- wireweird

Anyone who has ever tried patination will understand that it is akin to black magic. In this book the author describes clearly and concisely methods of patination using commonly available chemicals in such a way that the magic part is minimized and the results become as consistent as is reasonably possible.I refer to this book repeatedly in my studio and have found it immensely helpful. Its value goes beyond other volumes several times its price.
Lots of good thoughts on the cultural foundations of the art. Good recipes although I haven't tried any yet. Not much on techniques but enough to get started.
I'm only a few pages in and it is already well worth it.
The text is clear and the directions are very easy to follow. The illustrations show the lush finishes that can be attained. I only wish that there were more detailed descriptions of what process was used on some of the illustrations. A must for metal artists!
