I enjoyed Cam and Jane's story and appreciated the character development. It was well-written for the most part. What will keep me from forking out any more money on the series is the crass factor.I'm a voracious reader, never go anywhere without my latest book in hand and I read just about all genres. My basic requirement is that the author be able to write well. But I appreciate a little class. The lewd language employed in the scenes between the two main characters was unnecessary (in my opinion) and made them seem crude and uncouth. Don't misunderstand; I'm not a prude and I don't have a problem with a well-written sex scene nor does a little low-level profanity send me gasping for the equivalent of smelling salts. But vulgarity for the sake of vulgarity adds nothing to a good story and indeed, takes away from it.There are plenty of excellent romance authors who manage to write books with plenty of heart and heat without crossing the line into raunchiness. Kristan Higgins, Tessa Dare, Susan Elizabeth Phillips, Jennifer Crusie, - to name a few. This is, of course, a personal preference and I'm sure there are plenty of people who enjoy that kind of thing; I'm just not one of them. So if that's your fancy, this is the series for you. If not, here's your warning.
"Open your eyes and jump."One and Only is a delightful wedding romance story.Jane Denning is one of the bridesmaids. She's known as the dependable one. Her friends know they can count on her. She's mature and behaves like a mom at times. Her friend Elise is getting married and she has been given the job of babysitting the groom's brother, Cameron, the black sheep of the family. At first, she couldn't care less about Cameron, he seems to be exactly what people believe of him but the more time she spends with him, the more she can't reconcile what he shows her with what she thinks she knows of him.Cameron MacKinnon has been discharged from the Canadian military. He has done two tours in the Middle East and has the psychological scars to prove it. Now that he's back home he wants nothing more than to eat a nice piece of steak, enjoy the view from the tallest building and have sex with a willing woman. Much to his surprise, he finds Jane at the airport waiting for him and interfering with his plans. So in order to accomplish the items on his list, he will drag her out with him. This is when he notices that "plain Jane" is the farthest thing from the truth.Like I said earlier, a really cute love story. Jane is a nerd, a writer of a YA fantasy. She dresses in comfort and likes to play it safe. Yet, when Cameron pushes her to do the things that scare her, she's willing to let herself go. Her character continues to bloom throughout the story. Cameron suffers from low self-esteem and what's worse, he lets his family and friends think the worst of him. Many times he could have explained past events but he believed he wasn't worth it until Jane shows him differently. There was one scene where I cringed although I knew something similar was coming. Thankfully, the rest of the characters were there to set Cameron straight.I can't wait to read the next Bridesmaids Behaving Badly!"You're already a swan."4/5 Fangs
I enjoyed this story for about 50% of the book and then it sort of lost steam. Both H/h are interesting personalities and fit well together even though they are opposites and the story unfolded in a very plausible way. The romantic dynamic was entertaining but then the hero's conviction that he is a loser and doomed to fail began to grate on me. It was just a bit too much. Also, the "dark moment" that precedes the HEA was here and gone so fast that it didn't even feel like it happened, so the payoff in emotional satisfaction at the HEA was minor. In all this was a decent book but no one I would recommend rushing out to buy.
I started this series by reading the second book first, but Wendy’s initial reluctance to like Cameron because of his previous behavior intrigued me enough to know that I needed to start from the beginning.I saw a lot of people mentioning Cameron’s behavior and insinuating that he was kind of a jerk in the beginning of this story but, perhaps it’s because of my experience with a spouse who has PTSD, I could almost pinpoint the issue from the beginning. Which just means that Jenny Holiday did a pretty good job of making Cameron an authentic and well-developed character.I love how Cameron helped Jane discover her adventurous side by being supportive and suggestive without being aggressive and/or shaming her for being afraid. I appreciate that Jane wasn’t putting herself out there to impress Cameron or to change for him but that instead, he was just the catalyst to her finding that other side of herself. At the same time, I really enjoyed seeing the softer, more vulnerable side to Cameron and how his experiences in war were affecting him but that slowly Jane was slipping past his barriers. My favorite couples are the ones who bring out the best in each other without changing who they are at their core. That makes Jane and Cameron a pretty perfect couple in my eyes. This book was surprisingly emotional but still romantic and fun. This was a perfect way to introduce this cast of characters and a fantastic start to a new series!!
