From Kirkus Reviews
Dazzling metaphysical epic-adventure as Barker surpasses his previous ground-breaking work (The Great and Secret Show, 1989, etc.) to reconfigure the Fall and to imagine a modern-day attempt to reverse it. A complex cosmology underpins the vigorous, at times horrific, action here: ``Imajica'' is the known universe of five ``Dominions,'' or parallel worlds, four ``reconciled'' but the fifth, Earth, ``unreconciled''--unaware of the other four, of the tyrannical ``Autarch'' who rules them, and of the ``God Hapeximendios,'' who oversees all five (and who wrested ``His'' power from the ``Goddesses'' of old). Periodically, Hapeximendios has sent His ``sons''--including Christ--to attempt to unite, by magical rites, the Fifth Dominion to the others. The last attempted ``Reconciliation'' ended in catastrophe--an invasion of Earth by hellish powers--and today magic has been nearly eradicated from Earth by a ``Society'' that alone knows of the Imajica and of the catastrophe. The densely woven story here opens with a jealous man venturing into London's dankest slum to hire an assassin to kill his estranged wife, Judith; the assassin turns out to be a ``mystif,'' a fabulous creature from the Second Dominion, capable of appearing as the erotic ideal of any who behold it. As the mystif hunts Judith, it in turn is hunted by Judith's former lover, ``Gentle,'' who in time learns that he is the new ``Reconciler''- -and the mystif his long-forgotten servant. Undertaking dangerous, splendor-filled journeys through the other Dominions, Gentle and the mystif fall in love, marry, and encounter numerous fantastic creatures and, finally, death; later, Gentle helps dethrone the Autarch, learns the chilling secret of his and Judith's origin, helps free the Goddesses and slay God, and, back on Earth, inspires the destruction of the Society and undertakes Reconciliation--with hell-borne, then heaven-sent, results. An astonishing feat of the imagination, immensely engrossing despite its demanding--at times indulgent--length, running riot with ideas, fantastical inventions, graphic sex and violence, soul- terrors, and emotional and intellectual resonances. Barker's best yet. -- Copyright ©1991, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

I bought this book in 1994 when I made a port call in PORTSMOUTH, ENGLAND with the US NAVY carrier USS GEORGE WASHINGTON. I wanted a book that might take me a month to read while I was on deployment.Unfortunately, this huge book only lasted about a week because i couldn't put it down. This was a great mental exercise to try to keep up with the great story.Since the time I first read, and still have, this book, i have amazed myself by rereading it at least once a year and everytime it is like the first time. I get sucked in and can't put it down.
"Imajica" is the most original fantasy I've read in a long time. The worlds of the Imajica are different than any I've encountered. Yes, there are some large cities, and there are holy men, and both tribal and farming communities. However, the native races of these worlds are unique, as are the gods.At the center of the story is Gentle, an artist and playboy who, when not living off one rich girlfriend or another, makes his money creating paintings that get attributed to famous artists of the past. Gentle remembers only about ten years of his life and rarely questions this.Events begin to conspire to take Gentle away from Earth, known as the Fifth Dominion, through the other dominions and to astonishing discoveries that impact the fate of the entire Imajica, Earth and its sister worlds.I will give nothing more away, as every new wrinkle in the story presents new surprises and often delights. You may think you know where the story is going, but chances are, Clive barker is at least a step ahead of you. You'll find surprises right up to the end.The main characters are believable and richly drawn. Even the best of them has some darkness, and even the most evil have some redeeming qualities. You'll find terrifying creates called Oviates, a few strange new races, and unexpectedly human gods. And yes, the story has some graphic sex scenes, sometimes touching, sometimes raunchy, sometimes outright bizarre. If you love long, epic tales you can lose yourself in, give "Imajica" a shot.
I finally finished the book cover to cover after starting and re-starting it multiple times over the last few years. I am generally a Clive Barker fan. For instance, "The Great and Secret Show" is one of my favorite books of all time. For me, one of the things to overcome in Imajica, and one of the reasons that I had so many false starts on the book, is that the main protagonist is fairly seriously flawed (i.e. actually "human") but that also made it difficult for me to develop a sense of empathy for he or the other female protagonist. Once I let go of worrying about the morality and ethics of the two main characters, things got better! The writing is colorful and descriptive, constructing worlds that are believable and interesting. The fact that there is no clear, bright line of "good" and "evil" can be a little off-putting, but in the end makes the overall tone of the book more believable. I enjoyed it immensely in the end and will likely re-read to pick up on details that I surely missed the first time around.
This classic tale of love both unrequited and unreturned has been reinvented by an author better known for his chilling tours into the nightmare territories of demons. But truly horror is just barely scratching the surface of what Clive Barker has to offer. His artistry is far flung into the realms of magic, love, torment, love, desire, love and hate. Humanity is a rich tapestry filled with beauty and corruption. Clive Barker peels back the corner of the mask and exposes the underlying monster or angel. Imajica is filled with light and dark, beauty and rot. I have never tired of traveling there.
Imajica is a classic of speculative fiction for good reason: it's the story of five brilliantly conceived, detailed worlds - the Dominions- and three lives (well, more like a dozen) caught in the fate of these five Dominions. This isn't a book for faint hearted readers; it's hundreds of pages of intricate storytelling built around themes of love, death, sexuality, identity, purpose, and existence - but it doesn't lag and you'll find yourself wondering where Clive Barker comes up with such a visionary narrative. Fabulous female, gay, and gender-morphing characters! Audible production is quite well done, too.
Clive Barker's Imajica is a book that defies easy description. It has been a favorite book of mine since it was released in 1991 and I have read and reread it many many times over the years. I now own 4 copies of it. One hardcover with the original release American cover image. The same image in paperback that is dog eared and signed by the author, a paperback that I am able to read, and finally the Kindle edition so I have it with me nearly all the time. It's a journey into worlds that you've never imagined yet maybe always hoped for. The characters are rich and wonderful, the detail of the other dominions makes you wish they really were there to visit, and the deep philosophies it delves into makes it one of the most epic and satisfying books I have ever read. For me, each time I pick it up it feels both like a far away journey, and a homecoming of sorts in a way that is difficult to articulate. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to be swept away to faraway dominions by a truly genius storyteller.
