This book really helped me. I had not flown for over 8 years, and I have no idea what happened in my life to make me so afraid. 2 months ago my boss told me I had to fly! I cried, I cried and I cried. In reality, I have a high profile job so I knew I had to go. 4 flights in 1 day. Mechanical issues, delays, running through the airports, weather so bad lightening was streaming through the cabin! Did anyone see the lightening bolt that hit the Delta flight in ATLANTA? Well I was landing there at the same time!. But guess what, I got through it. And I did it by using techniques in this book! They greatly helped me. I even kept throwing out stats to my coworkers when certain things would happen. Knowing the mechanical and pilot side that I learned from this book, and breathing and calming techniques, I have to say this book was worth every cent! Thank you! My mother thanks you as I think I can fly across country to see her now!
I bought this book in preparation for a flight (obviously) but found that it's for so much more than that. It has excellent tips for everyday anxiety. I have had anxiety issues ever since I can remember and have found that knowledge in whatever I'm anxious about helps me to be a little more reasonable and calm. This book has great information about flying and planes (without being boring) that helps the person who freaks out over every little noise the plane makes (like I used to be). It has tips for whatever kind of anxiety/fears you have and for whatever your body does in reaction to those fears. From racing heart to the feeling of not being able to breathe - just overall great tips. I VERY highly recommend this book to anyone that either has a fear of flying or anxiety in general!!
I bought this book because in the past 5 or 6 years I have developed a fear of flying that I had not had previously. I have a job that requires me to fly around the country 6 to 8 times a year, and on occasion, overseas. For some strange reason in recent times, the idea of flying causes me anxiety even weeks out. The time prior to flying is a worried filled period that has negative effects on my work and my relationships. My family has made comments about how I begin to wear my "Flying Face" prior to trips and it makes me edgy. I bought this book in the hopes of trying to regain some semblance of control and attempt to face my fears with a greater degree of confidence.After reading this material - I cannot say that flying still does not bother me. I can say that some of the strategies did help me to be more comfortable. Although much of the information is not really new or is already available to people who, like myself, are afraid of flying; I can say that if you work your preparation and relaxation strategies that this book presents - I think who will find you approach flying in a better frame of mind.If people who are afraid of flying were to ask me if I would recommend this book, then my answer would be "Yes". If people were to ask me about a program to help them deal with fear of flying - I would say this book is only the doorway and would recommend an extensive program, Like SOAR, which I would say had the best results I have found for myself so far.
I have a fear of flying - especially take off and turbulence. I always pop a pill plus some alcohol in order to calm myself down but I started reading this book 2 weeks before my 20 hour flight to LA (plus another 5 hours to Cleveland) from Sydney and I kept reminding myself what I learnt from the book and I was calm during the entire flight. It worked for me and I hope if you're planning on purchasing this book, good luck and I hope it works for you too!
I used this book, along with a CD purchased at Amazon, to get me back in the air after 2 1/2 years without flying. Despite a phobia of flying I decided to book a flight that was 1 1/2hrs gate to gate to work on getting over it. Driving from MN to FL and NY was getting old and family members, despite trying to be understanding, didn't get it....and frankly, I didn't understand it either, but knew it was very, very real. This book has a no-nonsense approach and despite the fact that this no-nonsense approach can at times be a bit unnerving, it apparently is what I needed. I used this book and heavily relied upon the CD while actually on the flight. Prior to the flight there were lots of tears and definitely a panic attack, but I got on the flight and decided that "whatever will be, will be" and that I needed to give up control. I successfully completed my flight and felt exhausted but very proud for having decided on my own that I was going to do it. The keys for me were deciding when I was going to do my first flight ( not having someone else do this), picking a very short flight, having this book as a good source of information tucked inside my head, and having the CD to listen to while flying. It WAS NOT EASY, but I can safely say that I believe I can do it again and maybe even take a longer flight this next time. All of this despite the fact that the day before I left on the trip the newspaper published a near miss at my airport, upon arrival to the airport the day I left there were 5 police cars surrounding an abandoned, suspicious vehicle at the airport drop off area, and while in the air they suspended drink service due to turbulence. I got back on the plane to go home 4 days later after seeing footage from a plane whose landing gear failed to come down on Good Morning America....yup. Almost hysterical in hindsight since any ONE of those things would've brought on a panic attack ON THE GROUND with just the THOUGHT of having to fly. I'm not going to pretend that I don't still have anxiety while thinking about having to fly, but it doesn't have me grounded anymore. It's a manageable anxiety at this point. Baby steps. I'm not going to Europe....yet. Get the book. It is helpful. Check out the CD's.
