Astonishingly beautiful seen on a computer, I can only imagine what this book looks like in print. Told in rhyming text and illustrations that need each other to work as wonderfully as they do in A Leaf Can Be . . . The author and illustrator explore the role of leaves from the viewpoint of all four seasons. From spring and summer, when the days are warm and long A Leaf Can Be . . . an air cleaner, Earth greener. This is my favorite couplet. The illustrations should be on every Earth Day poster. These four words and two illustrations say mouthfuls about pollution and the need for green spaces. From autumn to winter and cold, short days, A Leaf Can Be . . . a wind rider, lake glider.One interesting thing I noticed about A Leaf Can Be . . . it is an example of how small the world is or how connected the world has become. The author, Laura Purdie Salas makes her home in Minnesota. The illustrator, Violeta Dabija has her home in Moldova. That's approximately 5,180 miles apart and they made a great collaboration.From biology to zoology, teachers can find many lesson subjects. Terrific introduction to leaves and trees. Luminous airbrushed illustrations glow with a feeling of wonder and whimsy; graphically simplified shapes make the illustrations easy for the very young to explore; and two word descriptors dominate the pages in a handwritten font. The large majority of text is contained in 5 pages of information at the back. The 2 word descriptors are given expanded information for parents and teachers to help young readers explore these simple ideas in greater depth. Some illustrations duplicate the wonderful character interaction seen on the cover. An inspiring work for the visually minded and one that will make curious minds eager to explore.
The coloring and pictures caught my eye on this one. I will enjoy reading it to my grand daughter. Great art work!

A few orioles gathered in the branches of a tree and sang as its leaves blossomed and budded. Leaves can have many purposes and are useful to many creatures, including caterpillars who use them as a "soft cradle" until they emerge from their cocoons as they begin their life cycle. Leaves can go from a cradle to a ladle. Dew and rain droplets can gather in the leaves for animals to drink. The smiling sun sends its energy down for the leaves so it can be a "food maker."Leaves can reach for the skies, topping a tree so the birds can nest and sing in its branches, but can stop the rain so two foxes beneath a tree can stay dry. Leaves can easily become a skin welter (watch out for that poison ivy!) or can be a "bat shelter." "Shade spiller / Mouth Filler / Air Cleaner / Earth greener." In the fall the leaves ride the wind, drifting to the ground for children to rake up into piles. The hills come alive with color just before the frost touches the tips of the leaves. There are many uses for leaves. Can you think of some?This is a beautifully lyrical, whimsical tale of many things that a leaf can do. I loved the gentle flow of this work and the gorgeous artwork that accompanied it. The depiction of Earth with its foliage in bloom under the skies was stunning. The minimalist effect of the dialogue can easily lend itself to a homeschool or class room discussion. For example, when we see the sun smiling at the tree, the "food maker," a discussion about chlorophyll could be undertaken.
