I used this textbook in a doctoral level psychology course, and it is a miserable book.I found that there were times when the book had the potential to be interesting, but completely botched the opportunity by continuing to be dry and needlessly wordy. The book states what can be said in seven words in at least 28 words. Rather than adopting a conversational method of relaying information and research, the book comes off as a professor of sorts, but one who is standing at your desk punctuating each word by jabbing a pointed finger in the air. I came to dread the weekly readings and papers assigned from this book, and during Hurricane Sandy this weekend, seriously contemplated using the book as kindling for a fire. There are much better textbooks on Developmental Science, which are more enjoyable and understandable. Though the book is thorough in its covering of the topic, a better book accompanied by supplemental reading materials would make for a much improved learning experience.
This book was pitched as a text for a graduate course. Although I think that the material in it is good and current, I think that it is short on content areas for a graduate course in Developmental Psychology. It is an edited text and like most edited texts its quality depends on the particular authors that the editor has selected. I would have preferred more on personality development.
I was assigned this book for the lifetime development class of my doctoral psychology program. I, and many of my cohort found it to be a really really dry read. It had some interesting info, but it's just too dense. They were trying too hard to cram everything in, but that just made it a boring read.
If there was a choice for zero stars, then I would have given it a zero! The only reason I purchased this book is because I had to for a graduate psychology class. The book is extremely dense, more fitted for a medical school class. I've had plenty of physiology and neurobiology classes, but the editors did not do a good job at all. The chapters are needlessly wordy! By far, the worst book I have ever had to read!!
I can see the content of the book has great potential, but I found the book impossible to read. I found myself re-reading paragraphs over and over to understand what it was saying. Too bad.
Oh my goodness!!! I don't know where to start with this book so I will simply say don't buy it unless you really have too. As one writer said and I fully agree, these writers are just simply "playing around with words" and have forgotten that they are writing for their readers to understand the book.
I used this book for a developmental psych course and have found that the content is very thorough, but some of the writing could have benefited from a little more editing.
This book is really hard to understand, even after a second reading. The author is so focused on using big psychology words that the teaching moments get lost and hard to follow.
