About the Author

Three-time Nobel Peace Prize nominee SCILLA ELWORTHY, PhD, founded the Oxford Research Group in 1982 to develop effective dialogue between nuclear weapons policy-makers worldwide and their critics. Their work included a series of dialogues between Chinese, Russian, and NATO nuclear scientists and the military, which formed the basis for later treaties. She founded Peace Direct in 2002 to fund, promote, and learn from local peace-builders in conflict areas, leading to the UN accepting the value and cost effectiveness of "locally-led" initiatives. Elworthy was awarded the Niwano Peace Prize in 2003. She was adviser to Peter Gabriel, Desmond Tutu, and Richard Branson in setting up The Elders and currently advises the boards of major international companies on future planning. She's chair of the Civil Society sector of the Hanwang Forum in China; a Councillor of the World Future Council; author of numerous books; a patron of Gender Rights and Equality Action Trust, MasterPeace, Oxford Research Group; and a member of the steering Committee of PAX, a service to help prevent wars and genocides. She received the Lifetime Achievement Award presented at the Voice of a Woman ceremony in July 2013.

Dr Elworthy is an inspiration - to women, to peace-makers and to all humanity.

Terrific book! Well told story! Great insights! World-changer!

I received this book as a gift from a friend and boy, am I glad of that!When you hear about all the problems of the world, from war and violence to extreme poverty, from environmental degradation to intransigent political problems, you will probably react by either denying or minimizing the problems, placing all your hope on some leaders to fix everything, resigning yourself to inevitable doom and giving up, or saying that you just don’t have any time or place in your life to deal with such issues. Through compelling tales of personal experience and stories of other amazing souls, many of whom she’s personally encountered, she blunts all such reactions and empowers you to take another path, a path to make a difference. It all starts by working on yourself: change the outer world by changing your inner world first. What the book did foremost for me was to give me hope that in spite of all that’s going on, things can turn for the better.You can get a quick flavor of the book by going to the TED website and viewing a 16-minute video on her talk, "Fighting with Nonviolence."

Pioneering the Possible is a Wake Up Call for Awakened Leadership. I finished reading it and am inspired! Scilla offers an impressive array of experience and knowledge, and I admire her for compiling it into this piece to share with the world. Many of her points resonated with me and, while reading, I smiled frequently as I came across several names of leaders whom I am studying. For example, I am currently taking Otto Scharmer's online course, Transforming Business, Society and Self and reading Rumi. And Scilla's advice is motivating me to take more steps toward cultivating inner peace and service leading through action.
